A Note on Language

Items in this collection date back to the early 1700s and showcase the growth and evolution of the United States. However, some of these items contain terms that today’s readers might consider outdated or inappropriate. As part of our commitment to transparency and openness with the public, we acknowledge that cultures’ mores, attitudes, and language change over time. The use of those terms reflects those historical periods and does not necessarily promote their continued use in contemporary society.
